15/01/2014 - Lose fat not weight
So after another festive season of over eating, drinking and partying, most of us on the 31st of December, full of good intention and maybe a "little" alcohol, decide next year will be different. I always think it's funny that a calendar has the power to make us want to make a change, but anyway, I digress.....
We see an influx of personal training companies like mine trying to get your business, because we know people are, well at the moment, open to the suggestion of what we do. So what do you want to do because there is a huge difference between fat loss and weight loss and each needs an individual approach.
If you want to experience some Weight Loss, then do you mean, body fat or everything, muscle, fluid and body fat? Remember the scales are the worst way for you to judge your success; I am continually surprised at the amount of people that ride the emotional roller coaster of the bathroom scales.
If it is important to "lose weight" you want to lose only excess body fat. Losing muscle will have a detrimental effect on your ability to metabolise your food, simply, you can't get rid of the packet of chips you ate as easily as when you had the extra weight or muscle. Lean muscle mass helps us burn off body fat even while we sleep, and muscles can help protect us against injury and ward off issues like osteoarthritis.
Don't cut back on food to lose body fat, this is the biggest myth ever, in fact many of my clients think I am crazy when I tell them what they must eat to lose body fat. You don't cut calories; you maybe should cut certain types of food only.
Remember you need good carbs, good fats and protein in your diet, yes your diet, we are all on a diet, diet simply means the sum of things you put in your mouth. If you eat only pizza and beer, then this is your diet, if you eat steamed chicken breast and broccoli then this is your diet.
